Out of Reach

This project was made by a team of 5 students for the CocoJam 2021.

Theme: "Direction"

In Out of reach, a man from work tries to reach the girl he loves by sending her a message in a paper airplane. 

Control the direction of the wind and make sure the plane reaches its destination while avoiding obstacles of New York sky.

Initial intentions for the story's narrative track (contains spoilers for the ending):

Two planes on the same day, one of steel and one of paper. Two opposite messages to deliver, one of hate, one of love. Two opposite directions, one going to hell, one living it. 

Our intentions based on the theme of this jam was to deliver an experience representing the way «direction» can have a strong meaning, both literally and metaphorically. 

Based on this, we came up with this idea for the story, the story of a man working in the World Trade Center on September 11th. Blocked and destined to a certain death, he realizes he has nothing else worthy to do but try to send a letter to his lover through a paper airplane. He writes the name and address of he and his wife's home and throws it to the sky, hoping that away from all this chaos, someone will catch it and deliver his final words. 

We wanted the game to look like a “normal” love story, until the final twist at the end reveals the darker and grounded tone of our narrative. Unfortunately, there was only so much we could achieve in 48h, and so we tried to condense our story into a visual narration that hopefully sent the message and hints properly. We do however realize that the story won't be as clear to understand as we had initially planned, which is why it felt right to us, for the sake of the team's passion, to share our full vision for our game.
